Nestled amidst the pristine waters of Resurrection Bay lies a hidden gem awaiting discovery: Orca Island. While the name might evoke images of the majestic marine mammals, Orcas Island offers much more than meets the eye. . Accessible only by boat, this secluded island offers a respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, inviting visitors to unwind and reconnect with nature. Follow me on a virtual journey as I share my incredible experience with my girlfriends of this idyllic destination off the coast of Seward, Alaska.
Ahoy Matey:
Once we arrived in Seward, Alaska, w were welcomed by the owners at the harbor. We were whisked away onto a privately-owned vessel for an hour-long boat ride across Resurrection Bay. The viewpoints along the journey are magical, and if you aren’t afraid of getting a little wet (like we did), sightseeing from the front of the boat adds some thrill on the windy seas. After hugging the cliffside far coast of the bay, we eventually turned into come calmer seas, approaching a tranquil heaven yurts strategically blending into the cove. Orcas Island is a serene retreat, characterized by its rugged coastline, dense forests, and breathtaking vistas.
A Symphony of Nature:
From the moment you step foot on Orca Island, you are enveloped in a symphony of natural wonders. Towering evergreens sway gently in the breeze, while the tranquil waters of Resurrection Bay glisten in the sunlight. The air is alive with the calls of seabirds and the occasional splash of a passing whale or seal. Here, amidst the untouched wilderness, it’s easy to lose yourself in the beauty of the natural world. We traversed the beautifully laid wooden planks designing natural paths around the island boasting a beautiful arch bridge connecting an expansion across the water. We settled into our yurt which boasts all the clamping amenities.
Glamping at its’ finest!
With multiple yurts to stay, you can find yourself over the cover, or just a few feet inland surrounded by trees. Each yurt cabin sleeps 2 to 4 people with a queen bed and a futon. Linens are provided, including pillows, blankets and comforters. The island boasts eco-friendly amenities including solar power with an intricately designed water system for the kitchen and propane range. There’s no need to pack kitchen supplies as the yurts include complete set of dishes and basic cookware. A dining and comfortable living area, propane fireplace, private bathroom with shower and compost toilet, and a large private deck with barbecue grill round out the stay experience. I admit to sleeping so well in these yurts, falling asleep to the gentle waves lapping underneath us.
Embracing Adventure
One of the joys of visiting Orca Island is the opportunity to explore its rugged coastline and hidden cove. its abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities. We laced up our hiking boots and set out for a bird’s eye view of the island by climbing the coastal trail a short boat ride across the cove to explore an old bunker left behind. We wandered the length of the island’s plank system through the dense forest where every bend revealed a new vista more breathtaking than the last. One sunny afternoon we ventured to the tidal pools on low tide to discover the many different sea creatures living just beneath the surface. Wildlife enthusiasts would delight in the chance to spot bald eagles soaring overhead, sea otters frolicking in the waves, and, if lucky, pods of orcas gliding gracefully through the waters. For the more adventurous souls, Orca Island offers ample opportunities for exploration and adrenaline-pumping activities. Thrill-seekers like ourselves would enjoy the sea kayaking expedition to hidden waterfalls nearby.
Tranquility of Orca Island Cabins:
To truly immerse oneself in the tranquility of Orca Island, you would want to find yourself on the community covered deck. Here you will find a serenity curled up in comfortable chairs boasting warm blankets, a fireplace, and hopefully a bottle of wine you packed just of the occasion. We had the pleasure of spending a few hours hearing stories from our host, and making new friends with fellow island visitors. It was a retreat to remember.
